XX century

The 20th century.

Probably the historians' favorite century of all time.

Two world wars, one Cold, several wars in the Middle East, a couple in the Far East.

The boom of technology.

Also, the devaluation of ... well, values. The fall of morality, they say.

But you know, I find this very weird.

The biggest failure of humankind in the XX century was listening to rock music and wearing some clothes that reveal more than your eyes. It wasn't the continuation of wars that were meant to 'save' people from their ideas and ideals, no. The biggest failure was the rock and roll style.

This is something that absolutely eludes my mind. We say that we should be moral and ethical, and tolerant, and whatever, now, in the XXI century, but just look at the way we comment the XX century.

For the XX century, we say that the good stuff is the technological progress and we stop here. Then, we start criticizing the way that girls dress since the 1920s. We do not say anything about the big problems and we do not say any more good stuff. As if nothing good happened other than creating the TV. As if sexism and racism weren't first addressed back then. As if the colonies didn't gain their freedom then. As if the United Nations weren't created then. As if the European Union wasn't created then.

We simply do not mention those. As if the good stuff happened only in the past 9 years of the XXI century, the wars were apparently in the XIXth /they're never mentioned in the comments about the XXth, so logically, they didn't happen then/ and the only problem about the XX was the fact that people wanted to live the way they want, not the way their parents imagined.

But no, morality fell during XX century, we all know that. Society fell. People went from good to bad, because suddenly, they didn't pick the same clothing /and we all know that anything new should be stoned to death/. Before that, the People didn't steal, kill, burn, pillage others and they did not sell themselves for money. That happened only in the period from 1901 'till 2000.

"But there are more criminals nowadays! XX century is rotten!"

Yeah, but there are more people too. 5,6 billion people during the century. Naturally, there'd be more thieves.

If you ask me, XX century is an awesome period of time to have lived through. If we've evolved, it's been at that point. Not by much, but at least a bit. Yes, we continue proving the saying 'the pen is sharper than the sword' wrong, but at least we've agreed to let black men and women vote.

If you ask me, all that constant whining about morality falling, about society crumbling and all that was just a simple, "You don't do what I tell you anymore!"

Well, no, I don't. It's odd, yes, but I have these thoughts, you see, these ideas, these dreams of a life that I can call mine, and not yours.
